Each Relief Camp was kept under the charge of an officer
of not less than the cadre of a Dy.Tahsildar by handing over a reimbursable
imprest amount of Rs.25,000/- to take care of any immediate needs of the
inmates. Three or four such camps were supervised by an officer of Tahsildar
cadre. The officials of all the departments were drafted to attend to
the relief works.
At the same time, a Medical Officer was posted to each camp by handing
over a reimbursable imprest amount of Rs.5000/- to take care of the health
needs of the inmates of the camp. Subsequently, the ADM was appointed
as Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (RRO) to supervise and monitor the
entire relief and rehabilitation operations. The immediate task of the
district administration was to provide basic minimum facilities like latrines,
bathrooms, sleeping facilities & lighting, and supplying of clothing,
toiletries, drinking water and cooked food to the inmates.
The PWD engineers have taken up the task of constructing sufficient
number of latrines and bathrooms, separately for men and women in no
time. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials have arranged water
supply through tanker lorries and other sources for both drinking water
and other daily needs in all the relief camps. All the camps were fully
lighted and a back up generator was provided in each camp considering
the fact that many of the inmates were women and children. BSNL has
provided temporary telephone connections in all the relief camps.
