On the same day, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Ommen Chandy visited the affected areas and convened a high level meeting with the participation of many cabinet ministers. A cabinet sub-committee was also constituted to take decisions for providing quick relief to the affected population and also to monitor the entire relief operations. Two senior IAS officers were also deputed by the State Government to Karunagapally to take stock of the situation and to render necessary help and advice to the District Administration.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee met at Karunagapally as and when required and has taken many timely decisions and the same were implemented by the district administration in letter and spirit. One such decision was to disburse ex-gratia @ Rs.1000/- per Tsunami affected family that reached the government relief camps on or before 7.00 pm on 27/12/04. A total of 8534 families were given the ex-gratia. Since the victims ran away from the disaster area without collecting any of their belongings, the district administration provided them clothes, mats, blankets, bed sheets, towels, toiletries, plates, glasses, buckets, chappals etc.

A common kitchen was opened in each camp for preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner to the inmates. The Taluk office supplied necessary provisions to each camp based on the requirement and in consultation with the charge officer of each camp. Items like Rice, Dal, sugar, Tea powder, oil, bread, bananas etc. were provided from the central point and the charge officer was delegated the powers to purchase other items like vegetables, milk and firewood. Only boiled and chlorinated water was served to the inmates for drinking purposes.
