Government of Kerala has sanctioned financial assistance for the kith
and kin of those who died in the Tsunami tragedy @Rs.1,00,000/- for
the deceased adult and Rs.50,000/- for the deceased child and deposited
the same in the bank accounts on the names of the legal heirs of the
deceased by 30/12/2004. Additionally, Rs.10,000/- was released as funeral
expenses.
The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh has handed over
5 such passbooks to the kith and kin of the deceased during his visit
to the affected area on 31/12/2004. The kith and kin of the deceased
could draw the money on production of legal heirship certificate from
appropriate authority. State Government have reduced the statutory notice
period required for issuing legal heirship certificate from 30 days
to 5 days, by considering these cases as special cases, in order to
enable the legal heirs to draw the compensation amount without delay
from the bank.
Government have also announced financial assistance for the injured
persons @Rs.5000/- for those who suffered simple injuries and @Rs.25,000/-
to those who suffered loss of limbs or eyes. Government of India have
sanctioned an uniform amount of Rs.1,00,000/- to the kith and kin of
the deceased. Government have also distributed free ration to all those
affected by the Tsunami attack directly and indirectly from 30/12/2004
to 2/04/2005. However, those in the relief camps were not given free
ration as long as they stayed in the relief camps as they were given
food from the common kitchen.
