The state Institute of Rural Development of Kerala was established on January 1, 1987 as part of an all-India strategy of creating rural development Institutes in the States utilising a generous grant from the European Economics Community. In 1988 the SIRD, Kerala was registered as an autonomous body under the Travancore Cochin Literary Scientific and Charitable Societies Act, 1955. From its inception the Institute is located in the rural setting of the Extension Training Centre (ETC) at Kottarakkara. Started as a central sector scheme, the cost of running the SIRD subsequently came to be borne on a 50:50 basis. The initial objectives of SIRD were set out clearly by the Government of India. Broadly following the GOI guidelines the SIRD, Kottarakkara has laid down the major objectives as noted below. To impart training to various official and non-official functionaries,
directly or indirectly involved in the process of rural development
with a view to equip them - • with the managerial skill for efficient designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating rural development Programme, and • with the techniques for enlisting community action in
the support of rural development programmes. To carry on research- operational and policy. • to bring about development in the sphere of appropriate
technology for strengthening the qualitative and quantitative aspects
of the production of rural artisans. To create an awareness of the potentialities of modern management
service as a major instrument for rural development. To take up such other programmes incidental to rural development as may be found necessary from time to time Fax No : 0474 -2454169 |
